DENNIS HALL
Founder and Managing Director, Maxton Fox Furniture Systems
Dennis Hall is the founder and Managing Director of Maxton Fox Furniture Systems.
Maxton Fox is a privately owned and proudly Australian business that has been designing and manufacturing commercial furniture and joinery systems since the 1960s.
Dennis began his professional career at the tender age of 15 as an apprentice carpenter and joiner in the building industry. However, his interest soon turned to upholstery (the family business) commencing night school to gain his qualifications.
At the age of 20, Dennis took over his father’s business, Hall & Etches (which was a small re-upholstery business in Sydney). This event set the course for a working collaboration with Benwick Furniture, a chair frame manufacturer, that would eventually lead to the formation of Tudor Furniture. This formidable pairing of companies (with complementary skillsets) led to numerous contracts including large scale projects for the NSW Government.
In the 1990s, in response to the design-led and ergonomic movement, Maxton Fox was launched, and the rest is history.
Headquartered at the factory premises in Sydney’s Western Suburbs, Maxton Fox services projects and customers throughout Australia, working in close partnership with project teams across a variety of sectors such as: Commercial Workplace, Residential, Education, Hospitality and Transportation.
Dennis continues to be passionate about Australian manufacturing and is buoyed by the growing interest and demand for Australia’s design expertise and innovation.
Sue Carr
Founder and Principal Director, Carr
Sue Carr is widely recognised by many as one of Australia’s preeminent interior designers. In a life dedicated to improving the Australian design landscape, Sue is renowned as being one of this country’s most successful and prolific design talents.
A thinker, innovator, designer and teacher, Sue is recognised as synonymous with the evolution of interior design in Australia. Her significant contribution to the advancement of a modernist interior and architectural aesthetic and her determination and passion to see design recognised as a vital instrument of how we live our lives has remained a core driver from when she first enrolled at RMIT’s interior design school at 18 years of age.
Sue’s story is incredibly fascinating from how she nearly donned a lab coat for a life amongst test tubes and Bunsen burners in the study of Science, to how she managed to convince a generation of men that being an interior designer did not mean she was there to do the curtains and cushions. Having initially studied to be an applied chemist ultimately it was the science of how we live that fascinated her the most.
In her forty years practising interior design, she has observed, and often anticipated, great changes in the way people live their lives with her work being admired and sought not only in Australia but Internationally.
Of note is Sue’s extraordinary contributions to the interior design industry, and for her driving force within Australian modern design lineage and heritage. Her work has helped to create an unprecedented cultural awareness for design in this country that few are able to match.
With so many high-calibre built environments that have come into fruition over the last 40 years, Sue is regularly acknowledged for her outstanding trajectory of work, and the numerous careers of others she has in some way nurtured. Sue’s work as a practitioner and educator has been instrumental in redefining interior design as not simply an afterthought but as a core discipline and vital component to architecture. She has an innate understanding of space, form, light and materials, and approaches every project with the belief that design has the power to make a positive difference to people’s lives. Sue Carr is the founder and continues to be the Principal Director of Carr, a Melbourne-based interior design and architecture practice representing over 40 years of work.

Tanya Rive
Co-Owner of Halliday + Baillie Ltd, CEO of Halliday + Ballie Pty Ltd Australia
Tanya is in her 19th year with Halliday + Baillie, 14 years as Co-Owner. Starting in Sales, then into Sales management, then into partnership in 2005.
Tanya’s sole background prior to H+B has been Sales + Sales management representing product to the specification market.
In 2005, Tanya moved to Australia. Being a New Zealand company H+B still had very little presence in Australia. Tanya took what was then still a very unknown company to the great heights that it is today.
Tanya was deeply involved in all aspects of the setting up of the company and very much on the sales side of the business to grow it.
The Halliday + Baillie brand in Australia (inside the Architectural Door hardware fittings market) is very highly respected and unashamedly high end.
This has not happened by accident however. This is entirely on purpose.
Having a specific + well-known brand through advertising, service, sponsoring the right awards, with specific notoriety and market position.
Tanya has insisted on all of the above and has achieved this with the help of her Australian team and having high quality product coming from our NZ manufacturing.
Next exciting moves for the company is manufacturing here in Australia.

After recently launching the INDE.Awards – the Asia Pacific region’s largest and most powerful interior design and architecture awards – to continue Indesign Media’s commitment to unflagging industry stewardship, this year Raj Nandan and Indesign Media embark upon tackling new challenges presented by the changing nature of the region’s design, architecture, engineering and property sectors. Gavin Campbell
Director and National President Elect, Design Institute Australia
I am a design professional and passionate member of the DIA with over 30 years extensive experience across a wide range of design projects and disciplines.
I am currently a Director and the National President Elect for the DIA. I will take up my role as National President in November 2019.
I was engaged at HASSELL for over 16 years as a Senior Associate within their Perth studio and was a Business Group Leader for their Interiors Group. Through this role I was actively involved in a wide range of projects throughout the practice including interior architecture/design, commercial office fit-out, residential, education, health, infrastructure and hospitality. I worked closely with national corporate practices, state, federal and local government clients in order to deliver a diverse portfolio of projects.
In the time since I left HASSELL six years ago I have been providing specialist design consultancy services across a variety of design disciplines, pursuing my belief that design is a collaborative exercise involving all stakeholders and participants involved on each project. My recent collaborations include interior design and architecture, branding and marketing, photography, styling and graphic design. I work collaboratively with clients and likeminded design professionals, utilising my vast range of experiences from many varied projects to bring real benefits to new projects.
I have a strong passion for design and its value to our culture. This has led me to be actively involved with the Design Institute of Australia both on a local, state and national level. I have been the DIA WA President for five years and a National Director for five years. I am the DIA representative for the International Federation of Interior Architects/Designers and attended the 2017 IFI Congress in Lagos on their behalf. These roles allow me to participate in the broader design context and to promote the values of good design across the whole community.
Through my position on the DIA Board and previously as a member of the National Advisory Council I have been a strong advocate for change within the DIA. I have been a key contributor to and supporter of the National Advisory Council’s Strategic vision and objectives in order to support Australian design. Great work has been achieved with a strong vision for the future, recognising the changing landscape of design.
I want to see Australia recognised as a Design nation. To achieve this we need to understand our regional differences, utilising the strengths that we have both at a local and national level. We need to leverage off the great work that each of the states does, streamlining and creating process, providing more support and a cohesive message to the community regarding the DIA and design for Australia.
